Setting up DNS on Dynadot

Step-by-step instructions for connecting your Dynadot domain to WedSites.

If you registered your domain with Dynadot, follow these steps to add the DNS records needed to connect it to your WedSites wedding website.

Before you start

Make sure you've added your domain to WedSites first. Go to Settings > General and enter your custom domain, then save. Then come back here to set up your DNS records.

You'll need access to your Dynadot account. Make sure you can log in and that you have permission to manage DNS for your domain.

DNS records you need to add

You'll be adding these two records to your Dynadot domain:

Record Type

Host

Points To / Target

TTL

A (Address)

@

37.16.10.26

3600

CNAME (Alias)

www

domains.wedsites.com

3600

Important: You only need the A record if you're using an apex domain (like yourwedding.com). You only need the CNAME if you're using a subdomain (like www.yourwedding.com). We recommend adding both so both versions of your domain work.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Log in to Dynadot

Go to dynadot.com and sign in to your account.

Step 2: Navigate to domain settings

  1. Click My Domains in the left sidebar (or top navigation)

  2. Click Manage next to your domain

  3. You'll see your domain's settings page

Step 3: Set DNS type

  1. Look for the DNS Settings or Name Server Settings section

  2. Make sure the DNS option is set to Dynadot DNS (not forwarding, nameservers, or stealth)

  3. If it's set to something else, change it to Dynadot DNS and click Save

This tells Dynadot that you want to manage DNS records directly.

Step 4: Open DNS records

  1. Click DNS Settings or Edit DNS for your domain

  2. You should see a form for managing DNS records, with sections for Domain Record (A) and Subdomain Records

Step 5: Check for existing A records

Look for any existing A records for the root domain.

If you see existing A records:
- You need to remove any A records that don't point to 37.16.10.26
- Having multiple A records causes your domain to only work sometimes
- Clear the existing IP address and replace it with the correct one

Common conflicting records to look for:
- Dynadot parking page A records
- Old hosting or forwarding A records

Step 6: Add the A record

  1. In the Domain Record (A) section, find the field for the root domain

  2. Enter the IP address: 37.16.10.26

  3. If there's a TTL option, set it to 3600 or leave as default

Step 7: Add the CNAME record

  1. In the Subdomain Records section, look for a row to add a subdomain record

  2. Fill in the fields:

    • Subdomain: www

    • Record Type: CNAME

    • IP Address or Target Host: domains.wedsites.com

  3. If there's a TTL option, set it to 3600 or leave as default

Using a custom subdomain? If you're using something like wedding.yourwedding.com instead of www, replace "www" with "wedding" in the Subdomain field.

Step 8: Save your DNS settings

Click Save DNS or Save to apply all changes. Make sure you see a confirmation message.

After adding the records

Wait for DNS propagation. Dynadot DNS changes typically take 15 minutes to a few hours to fully propagate.

SSL certificate is automatic. Once your domain connects, we'll automatically add an SSL certificate so your site works with https. This happens within a few hours of your domain connecting.

Test your domain. After waiting, try visiting your domain in a browser. You should see your wedding website!

Troubleshooting

Domain not working after several hours?
- Double-check that you entered the DNS records exactly as shown above
- Make sure DNS is set to Dynadot DNS (not forwarding or nameservers)
- Make sure you removed any conflicting A records
- Verify you clicked Save DNS after making changes
- Check that you entered your domain in WedSites under Settings > General

Still seeing Dynadot parking page?
- Make sure DNS type is set to Dynadot DNS, not "Parking" or "Forwarding"
- Delete any old A records for the root domain
- Try clearing your browser cache or testing in incognito mode

DNS type confusion?
- Dynadot has several DNS modes: Dynadot DNS, Nameservers, Forwarding, Stealth, and Parking
- You must use Dynadot DNS to manage individual DNS records
- If you select Nameservers, you're pointing DNS management to another provider

CNAME issues?
- Make sure the Subdomain field is "www" and not blank
- Verify the Target Host field is exactly: domains.wedsites.com
- Check that you're adding the CNAME in the Subdomain Records section, not the Domain Record section

Need to verify DNS setup?
- Go to dnschecker.org
- Enter your domain and select "A" record type
- You should see 37.16.10.26 in the results

Dynadot-specific notes

DNS type must be Dynadot DNS: Before you can add individual DNS records, you need to make sure the domain's DNS type is set to "Dynadot DNS." If it's set to Nameservers, Forwarding, Stealth, or Parking, you won't see the DNS record editing form.

Domain Record vs Subdomain Records: Dynadot separates the root domain (A record) from subdomain records (CNAME, etc.) into different sections. Make sure you add the A record in the Domain Record section and the CNAME in the Subdomain Records section.

Two-factor authentication: Dynadot recommends enabling two-factor authentication. If you have it enabled, make sure you have your authentication device when making DNS changes.

Email hosting: If you use Dynadot for email, your MX records are separate and won't be affected by adding these A and CNAME records.

Domain marketplace: Dynadot is known for their domain marketplace. If your domain is listed for sale, it may have different DNS settings. Remove the listing before making DNS changes.
