Setting up DNS on Hover

Step-by-step instructions for connecting your Hover domain to WedSites.

If you registered your domain with Hover, follow these steps to add the DNS records needed to connect it to your WedSites wedding website.

Before you start

Make sure you've added your domain to WedSites first. Go to Settings > General and enter your custom domain, then save. Then come back here to set up your DNS records.

You'll need access to your Hover account. Make sure you can log in and that you have permission to manage DNS for your domain.

DNS records you need to add

You'll be adding these two records to your Hover domain:

Record Type

Hostname

Target / IP Address

TTL

A

@

37.16.10.26

900

CNAME

www

domains.wedsites.com

900

Important: You only need the A record if you're using an apex domain (like yourwedding.com). You only need the CNAME if you're using a subdomain (like www.yourwedding.com). We recommend adding both so both versions of your domain work.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Log in to Hover

Go to hover.com and sign in to your account.

Step 2: Access DNS settings

  1. Click on Domains in the top navigation

  2. Find your domain in the list and click on it

  3. Click the DNS tab or Edit DNS button

You'll see a list of your current DNS records.

Step 3: Remove default Hover forwarding (if present)

Hover often sets up default forwarding records when you register a domain.

  1. Look for records labeled "Hover.com Forwarding" or similar

  2. If you see these, click the X or Delete button to remove them

  3. This prevents conflicts with your WedSites records

Step 4: Check for existing A records

Look for any existing A records with @ in the Hostname column.

If you see existing A records for @:
- You need to delete any A records that don't point to 37.16.10.26
- Having multiple A records causes your domain to only work sometimes
- Click the X or Delete button next to each conflicting record

Common conflicting records to look for:
- Hover forwarding A records
- Old hosting A records
- Multiple A records with different IP addresses

Step 5: Add the A record

  1. Click Add New or Add A Record

  2. Fill in the fields:

    • Hostname: @ (this represents your root domain)

    • Record Type: A

    • IP Address: 37.16.10.26

    • TTL: 900 (15 minutes) or leave as default

  3. Click Save or Add Record

Step 6: Add the CNAME record

  1. Click Add New or Add CNAME Record

  2. Fill in the fields:

    • Hostname: www (or your subdomain name if different)

    • Record Type: CNAME

    • Target Host: domains.wedsites.com

    • TTL: 900 or leave as default

  3. Click Save or Add Record

Using a custom subdomain? If you're using something like wedding.yourwedding.com instead of www, replace "www" with "wedding" in the Hostname field.

Step 7: Verify your records

After saving, you should see both records in your DNS records list:
- An A record with @ pointing to 37.16.10.26
- A CNAME record with www pointing to domains.wedsites.com

After adding the records

Wait for DNS propagation. Hover's DNS changes usually take effect within 15-30 minutes, but can take up to 24 hours in some cases.

SSL certificate is automatic. Once your domain connects, we'll automatically add an SSL certificate so your site works with https. This happens within a few hours of your domain connecting.

Test your domain. After waiting, try visiting your domain in a browser. You should see your wedding website!

Troubleshooting

Domain not working after 30 minutes?
- Double-check that you entered the DNS records exactly as shown above
- Make sure you deleted any conflicting A records for @
- Verify you removed any Hover forwarding records
- Check that you entered your domain in WedSites under Settings > General

Still seeing Hover parking page or forwarding?
- Make sure you deleted all Hover.com forwarding records
- Delete all old A records for @
- Wait a bit longer and try clearing your browser cache

Getting "Record already exists" error?
- This means there's already a record with that hostname
- Find and delete the existing record first
- Then add your new record

CNAME record issues?
- Make sure the Hostname is "www" and not "@"
- Verify the Target is exactly: domains.wedsites.com (no http://)
- Hover doesn't require a trailing dot, so don't add one

Need to verify DNS setup?
- Go to dnschecker.org
- Enter your domain and select "A" record type
- You should see 37.16.10.26 in the results worldwide

Hover-specific notes

Clean interface: Hover is known for its simple, straightforward DNS interface. The process is typically easier than other registrars.

No upsells: Unlike some registrars, Hover doesn't push parking pages or website builders that create conflicting records.

Email forwarding: If you're using Hover's free email forwarding, it will continue to work after adding these DNS records (it uses separate MX records).

Whois privacy: Hover includes Whois privacy for free, which is unrelated to DNS and will keep working.

TTL values: Hover's default TTL of 900 seconds (15 minutes) is fine. You don't need to change it.
